Story and photo by Tony Fox Being sixteen prevented one from legally being in Chicago’s pool rooms in the ’60s. However, a crafty sixteen-year-old, Glenn “Piggy Banks” Rogers, convinced a pool room owner to allow him to shine shoes in the pool room. With full access to the tables and a wealth of pool talent surrounding him, Glenn Rogers’ skills began to rise. The peak of his rise came at this year’s Derby City Classic as he was inducted into the One Pocket Hall of Fame.  In an interview prior to the formal induction Rogers revealed how he received the nickname “Piggy Banks.” It began with physical likeness to a comedian named Pigmeat Markham. However, as his banking skills rapidly advanced, he was dubbed “Piggy Banks” by older players in the pool room. On the public pool scene, his greatest achievement was his second place finish in the 2001 Derby City Classic. Additionally, he had several top three finishes in the event. He was the featured player in pool magazine articles about banking. Rogers also remembers a first place win at a North Shore Billiards event. The fifty-nine-year-old thinks it was in 1970 or 1980. At the Hall of Fame dinner, Freddie the Beard and others recalled stories of Rogers’ early days, his development and move to Chicago’s South Side to join the legendary “Bugs” Rucker, another Hall of Fame inductee. The father of three and grandfather of three expressed his “great appreciation” to be included among “…so many great players.” In his spare time, he instructs a few players “here and there.” His advice to up coming players: “Get behind players with good character. Practice!” The left-handed bank magician sees “Left Hand Walter” as one of his early idols.
